Two Avant–gardes?! Rhymes
Contemporary & Modern
Story
Two Avant-gardes — an exhibition held as a part of the contemporary art festival “First factory of Avant-garde”. It was created by the AZ Museum and was held at the Ivanovo Regional Art Museum in the city of Ivanovo. The exhibition rhymes avant-garde masterpieces from Ivanovo collection with distinguished creations from XX century second half artists. There are several connections between two generations of artists. The famous collection of George Costakis that was used for studying paintings of Malevich, Kandinsky, Rozanova, Rodchenko and other futurism artists, became a source of inspiration for all the Sixtiers.
«...the exhibition «Two Avant-Gardes» is the museum hit of the season, avant-garde classics from the Ivanovo collection and classics of art of the 60-70s of the 20th century from the collection of the AZ Museum in Moscow. A сomparison of the two avant-gardes - pre-war and post-war. There you can see how avant-garde themes, motifs, plots flow into each other. To understand what the avant-garde is, which today is our international art currency»

Temporary exhibition Axonometry
The exhibition hall in the historic building of the Ivanovo Museum was divided into rooms telling about the dialogue between the two eras. A light frame structure covered with translucent fabric was built into the exposition space, where we’ve put different modules where all the exhibits were placed as if in a display.
All the accompanying texts were printed directly on the fabric - duspo and chiffon. The lighting inside the modules turned some of them into a kind of lightboxes, which made the exposition look radiant and airy.
Construction principle
Visual communication
In consortium with our long-term partners Tuman Studio, a unique design code and overall graphic design of the project was developed.
The visual communication in the exhibit is centered around the portraits of two «Jacks» from paintings belonging to different artistic periods, accompanied by a typographic font featuring aesthetically harmonious characters. The choice of yellow as the primary color pays homage to the avant-garde art movement. The exhibit’s design exclusively incorporates fabric structures, drawing inspiration from the textile legacy of Ivanovo and the agitational use of cotton during the 1920s and 1930s.
